THE ROLE OF THE BOARD
As the use of AI accelerates, its benefits are clear, but guardrails are needed. Societal norms are being challenged and there is a pervasive nervousness about where AI could lead. With the AI Impact Summit underway in India with its Three Sutras: People, Planet and Progress, it is timely to focus on the potential of AI but also the risks and the challenges of adequately regulating.
A key theme is the under-representation of a number of important voices in the development of AI. The Summit in India is arguing strongly that the global South should not be left behind. There is also a case to be made regarding female representation. Recent reports of women’s posts being downgraded or hidden on professional social media suggest that the impact of technology is not gender neutral.
