WOMEN ON RETAIL BOARDS
International Women's Day is a global event held annually on March 8th celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It also emphasises the importance of gender balance and representation.
Cognitive diversity and access to talent are characteristics of successful organisations and gender balance plays a role. It’s too easy to think the challenge is all about sector. It’s evidently not.
While attention has focussed on sectors that have been traditionally male dominated, including extractives, automotive and manufacturing, other sectors where a higher level of female representation would be expected, for example Retail or FMCG, do not necessarily perform well in terms of women in the crucial CEO role.
Fidelio's Advisory Partner, Simon Irwin, has been focussing in particular on the value contribution of Boards in the retail sector. Looking at fifteen UK major listed retailers, he noted that at the time of writing there wasn’t a single female CEO, despite in many cases a customer base and workforce with high female representation.
