NEW FIRSTS
Fidelio has contributed to, and regularly commented on, progress towards gender balance and the importance of cognitive diversity. Over the last 15 years women have become more visible in leadership roles, and it sometimes comes as a surprise when major appointments are announced which are “firsts” for women.
Two recent such appointments were Dame Sarah Mullally, who will become the first female Archbishop of Canterbury in early 2026 and Sanae Takaichi, the first female Prime Minister in Japan.
The appointment of the Archbishop of Canterbury was momentous - the first woman as leader of the Anglican Church in over 1000 years of tradition and 500 years since the split from Rome. Perhaps this reflects some of the challenges that the Church has been facing, including harrowing instances and allegations of abuse, but also very different views regarding the leadership of women across an organisation that comprises 85 million Anglicans across 165 countries.
