Fidelio Update – “A Seat at the Table” – (Female) Presence and Authority in the Boardroom

London, 30th September 2016 – Presence and authority underpin leadership. These qualities are subjective and deserve attention from women aspiring to the top table. In politics, for example, after the turbulence of the Brexit Referendum the UK turned to the calm presence of Theresa May. In the US, by contrast, Hillary Clinton faces the extraordinary question “does she look like a President?”

Reflecting this challenge, presence and authority is a key component of Fidelio’s “A Seat at the Table”  Programme for senior female executives and directors. The fourth iteration of this innovative, high impact, and intensely practical Programme will take place on Tuesday 14th – Wednesday 15th March 2017 at Leeds Castle, Kent, UK.

The purpose of A Seat at the Table” is to ensure senior women succeed to and at the top table. To achieve this they must be perceived both as leaders and as credible Board members. It is the perception of decision-makers that matters, and as recent research has shown, progress still needs to be made in the UK and the US – Women in the Workplace; the Power of Parity.

  • Anne de Kerkchove, a rare female tech CEO and NED, A Seat at the Table” explores e-presence and e-reputation ensuring participants are consistent in establishing presence and authority across all critical channels. Rod Chamberlain, Non-Executive Director, Chair and CEO advisor, brings exceptional clarity to the importance of profile. Participants on the Programme are challenged to focus on key attributesand experience that prepares them for the top table – whether at Executive Director or Non-Executive Director level. This forms the basis of a personal professional summary, which is brief, compelling, conveys leadership and can be applied across resumes and biographies.
  • Beyond the printed word, Chris Heimann, theatre director and director of improvisation at one of the world’s leading drama schools, identifiesconfidence as a key attribute for leaders. Confidence is required long-before the Boardroom table and Chris enables participants to flex and project confidence in a range of business and social situations.Establishing connections and contacts; initiating introductions andnavigating networks and networking are integral steps to the Boardroom; Chris empowers participants to take these steps.
  • Once at the top table, effectiveness is dependent on much more than technical expertise. The ability to connect, to persuade, to interrupt and to challenge characterise successful Executive and Non-Executive Directors. Chris and Rod combine forces and enable the senior women attending A Seat at the Table to develop these essential engagement skills and to incorporate them into their repertoire through topical and practical case studies around the Boardroom table.

Board Directors and Executive Committee Members undoubtedly need technical and operational expertise. But the ability to inspire confidence and to demonstrate presence and authority is critical. These attributes pave the way to the top table and underpin effectiveness at the Board table. Fidelio’s third A Seat at the Table Programme was held in September 2016 and participants rated the modules focussing on “Presence and Authority” as well as “e-reputation” very favourably – “highly distinctive, extremely valuable and immediately actionable.”
